Blueberry Section
Southern High Bush Blueberries are the only kind of Blueberries that bear fruit in Southern California. Blueberries do not go totally dormant here so this year all of our blueberries are in containers ready to start growing. The flowers and the berries are gorgeous, even before they get ripe.
You will do best growing Blueberries in large pots because it is easier to keep your soil in the lower Ph ranges that Blueberries need. Many Blueberries need a polinator so be sure you plan on more than one. Some are self pollinating. We try to carry only the blueberries that do not need lots of hours of cold nights.
We have Blueberry soil mix ready for you to plant in. Lots of peat moss to keep that ph down where it should be. We have some inexpensive PH meters too. For fertilizer, use any of the organic fertilizer mixes. I like Cottonseed Meal. Just a small handful every 3 or 4 weeks will do it. Do NOT use our fertilizer because blueberries only like organic fertilizers.
Pink Lemonade Blueberry (Sorry, Not Available)
Sunshine Blue Blueberry
.Comment from a Florida Home owner "Sunshine Blue is what I have been growing for years now.
The beauty of this ...variety is that they require the LEAST amount of chill hours, they are self pollinating and grow no more than about 3ft x ...3ft
AND they are the least fussy when it comes to pH levels."The plant in the picture is a potted Sunshine Blue plant loaded with berries. Grew fine, doesn't get real big but this was the first year. Good one for smaller areas.
Misty Blueberry
Misty Southern High bush Early. In the west, Misty is quite
vigorous, growing very well both on the coast and in the inland heat. This
excellent fruit does well in areas with chilling as low as 150 hours and all
areas with mild winters and hot summers.
...Sharp Blueberry... — Nearly evergreen in mild winter climates. Bares fruit nearly year-round. Evelyn planted 3 of these in big pots sunk half way into the soil. First year Sharp really impressed me. Nice big plants...I like big. Vigorous plant to 6 ft. they didn't have much fruit in the summer, but we didn't have a summer and my only available place doesn't have much sun. But come fall with just one hot spell and they had some blueberries all the time and were still blooming and making sweet berries at Christmas. I picked 4 christmas morning. Dime-size dark blue fruit. 200 hours.
Southmoon... — Exceptional berries with superb flavor. Florida native with vigorous, upright character. Performs well in California both inland and coastal. Prefers light sandy soils. 500 hours. (pp#9834) I didn't have a Southmoon to plant so don't know. I'll grab one early this year.

We did not order any this year since we didn't sell all of last years. I did order for myself a sour cherry
My two low chill cherries are still on probation. Evelyn had lots of baby cherries almost none were actually pollinated so they all fell off! Boo

The breeders have been working with Cherries and with
Blueberries to find those that are adaptable to our milder climate. I planted
the two suggested Cherries last year in my back area. You really need two for
good pollination. Last year one had a few tiny green cherries but they soon
fell off. I am anxious to see what this year will bring.

We can't order them all so you can put in your order for that special variety that you want up to and including November 13th. On Monday the 14th the last order has to be in. No exceptions!
Example: You may want to try the two Low chill Sweet Cherries. We didn't order any. You can put your order in to Weidners now or during the Fruit tree weekend and you will get your order along with our bare root trees in January and you will get them at the regular price..just as if we had put in a quantity order. It's a real pain for the Dave Wilson company but they do it to help you.
Go to http://www.davewilson.com and click on the Home orchard. You'll find tons of useful information and you can look at all the varieties available and put together your SOFT order. It's based on availability so the sooner you do it the better. Just phone us at 760 436 2194 or send us a detailed email and we'll take good care of you.
Fall hint
You can help your fruit trees go into a good dormancy more easily if you take away as much water as possible in the fall. Unless we have one of our fall Santa Ana heat waves. If that happens get out there right away and turn on the water. As your fruit trees begin to drop their leaves be very sure to keep them raked up and thrown away. those leaves and the mummified fruit is where the spores for Peach leaf curl and a host of other fungal diseases are hiding. In the spring when the diseases show up it is too late to spray. Your dormant sprays are so important and so hard to do. Timing them in between the rains we hope to get, etc.
Citrus trees? An old neglected citrus will have every pest, disease in the world plus tons of ants.
Try to prune your citrus so that no branches touch the ground or any other tree or fence. Then use Tangle foot around the Trunk. Spray two times during the winter with a good Oil spray and that will help. Benefial insects will also be on your side.
These are all organic and non toxic things that you can do to keep your citrus clean and healthy.
